Refurbishments for Barnsley

2nd August 2016

RSS were approached by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council in November 2015 to discuss the best value proposition for improvements to six play areas in the Barnsley suburb of Penistone. Following a site inspection, RSS proposed a refurbishment programme whereby defective items would be replaced and the corroded surfaces treated and repainted.

Refurbishment is an increasingly popular alternative to replacement and RSS have the necessary skills and experience to ensure that refurbishment work is undertaken to the highest standard. By refurbishing you can give your play area a new lease of life and up to another 10 years of use. It also has the following advantages:-

  • Much less costly – a typical refurbishment will cost 20% of a new play area
  • Reduced loss of use – a refurbishment will generally only take 3–5 days depending on the size of the unit
  • Reduced environmental impact - no disposal of concrete and surfacing materials which are difficult and expensive to recycle
  • Use of the latest materials – lead and phthalate free paints are used and high density polyethylene can be used to replace plywood

The refurbishment programme was scheduled to commence in the Spring to ensure the areas were fully available for the Summer. During this process, rotten timbers and damaged parts were replaced, the steel posts were repainted and the units brought back to “as new” condition. The work was completed in March 2016.

Jo Birch, Parks Supervisor for Barnsley MBC, commented “With a relatively small amount of funding raised for improving existing play spaces in Penistone, thanks to working in partnership with RSS, they repaired and repainted a number of sites across the area, giving them a new lease of life in readiness for the summer ahead. Great job!”
