Playground refurbishment Playground Refurbishment

RSS Playground Inspection and Maintenance has recently completed a substantial refurbishment of a 7-tower HAGS SMP play unit at Sundown Adventureland.  Sundown Adventureland is an amusement park for the Under 10’s located in Retford, Nottinghamshire.

An independent RPII inspection identified significant timber decay, leaking from roofs and rusting of metal components on the 25 year old unit located in the Fort Apache area of the amusement park, which has been popular with visitors for many years.  The Fort Apache play area faced an estimated replacement cost of £200,000, so RSS were approached to see if they could offer Sundown a more cost effective way to improve their play area.

RSS undertook a full site survey identifying all the defective items and proposed a full refurbishment.  The refurbishment included:-

  • the removal and replacement of decayed timbers
  • steel work to be removed, welds repaired, shot blasted and powder coated at our factory in Selby
  • the slides and link bridges to be replaced and new clamps fitted to the tube slides and crawl tube
  • new decks, posts and panels to be installed

All spare parts were supplied from the HAGS SMP manufacturing facility in Sweden and stained to the customer’s specified non-standard colour.

The fixed price for the complete refurbishment totalled £76,000, a little over a third of the cost of a replacement unit.

Gaynor Corr of Sundown Adventureland commented “Good reliable work finished on time by a very friendly competent company, RSS were a pleasure to work with.”

The refurbishment work on site commenced in November and was finished in early  January 2015, renovating the unit from looking very tired and run down into a newly transformed, safe play area ready for another 25 years of use."
