Playground Repairs at Hemsworth Park Hemsworth Park unit repairs

Hemsworth Water Park, situated in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, has a large timber unit with tube slide around 12m high.  Unfortunately at the Inspection in October 2011, extensive timber rot was discovered.  RSS Playmakers quoted to replace both upper and lower decks including upgrading the support fabrications to provide additional stability.

During dismantling of the old decks, extensive timber rot was also discovered in one of the main support legs.  RSS Playmakers commissioned a structural engineer’s report and recommended repair process, which included cutting the support leg to remove the rotted timber section.  A brace was fabricated to hold the uprights in place before fitting a piece of oak almost 2m in length, secured in place with specially made stainless steel bolts.

Replacement cost for a unit of this magnitude is in the region of £250,000.  Thanks to the commitment of the local Council members and the skill and technical knowledge of RSS Playmakers, the cost of this project was approx. £16.5K – less than 10% of full replacement cost.

With works starting at the beginning of March 2012, all works were completed on schedule and the Park opened on 31st March 2012 ready for the summer season.
